The role of teachers is considered one of the most decisive factors in the success or failure of a child with Special Educational Needs being taught and learning alongside their peers in mainstream settings. The objective of this study is to analyse the perceived efficacy of inclusive practices in achieving quality educational inclusion, and the intensity with which they are implemented in mainstream schooling contexts. The aim is also to study whether there is a positive effect of this perceived efficacy in achieving quality inclusion on pupils with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Similarly, it is analysed whether there is a mediating effect in this relationship of the variable related to the intensity of use (understood as the degree of use that teachers make of inclusive practices). To this end, 454 teachers from the Spanish education system completed an online questionnaire. Use of structural equation modelling reveals that the efficacy teachers perceive of the inclusive practices has positive effects on achieving the inclusion of these pupils. We found a mediating effect of the intensity with which the practices are implemented on this achievement of inclusion. The implications of these results are discussed with a view to introducing improvements in prior teacher-training programmes.

This paper aims to understand how teachers' attitudes are contributing to or hindering the educational inclusion of students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Implicit and explicit measurement of the attitudes of fifty pre-service teachers towards ASD before and after a short-term training on Autism is presented. The explicit measure used was a Likert-type questionnaire, while the implicit measure was a Single Target Implicit Association Test (ST-IAT). After statistical analysis of the data, it was found that prospective teachers' explicit attitudes were positive before the short-term training, and they were significantly better after it. Conversely, participants' implicit attitudes were neutral before the short-term training, and no significant difference was found after it. Additionally, no statistically significant relation was obtained between explicit and implicit attitudes, either before or after training, which suggests that the used instruments measure different attitudinal constructs. According to the remaining findings, it is concluded that explicit attitudes may be more prone to social desirability bias than implicit ones, implying that future attitudes research regarding sensitive topics such as the educational inclusion of students with Autism should combine both measures. Moreover, implicit attitudes seem more difficult to change than explicit ones. Some implications for pre-service teacher education are discussed.

Social networks are essential for social inclusion as they create opportunities for the achievement of different types of social support. People with intellectual disabilities encounter barriers to establishing social relationships and often have reduced social support networks. A structured interview was designed with the aim of studying the characteristics of the personal support networks of adolescents with intellectual disabilities. 21 secondary schools and 2 special schools were contacted to ask for their collaboration in the recruitment of students with intellectual disabilities from 14 to 19 years old. Of these, 15 schools managed to recruit 27 students and obtain the consent of both their families and the participants. Information was collected on the composition of their personal networks and their functionality as support networks. The individual data of each participant was analysed using the EgoNet social network analysis software and the relationship set was analysed using statistical techniques. The study shows that reduced social networks are identified and that friendships, linked mainly to the school, and family members are the main sources of support. The study highlights the importance of promoting social relationships in adolescents with intellectual disabilities in order to increase opportunities to develop supportive relationships that favour social inclusion.

The parenting of children with autism has traditionally been explored through its negative aspects, but researchers have started to look for different parental experiences focusing on the positive experiences, family resilience and strengths of children with autism. A cross-cultural analysis considers that cultural understanding of autism reflects the way different societies and parents understand it, the variation in meanings of health, illness and disability and not simply the amount of information about autism. In a small-scale exploratory study in Spain, 8 parents from different families were interviewed to explore how they experienced their children's autism and their perception of society's response to it. Findings suggested a general lack of information about autism, parents' trouble finding strengths of autism and a division of roles and responsibilities that seems to place a disproportionate load on the mothers.

Personal and contextual factors influencing the entrepreneurial intentions of people with disabilities in Spain

Entrepreneurship is a feasible option for people with disabilities as it allows room for flexibility. This study investigates the factors that influence the entrepreneurial intentions of people with disabilities in Spain. The data were obtained from nine focus groups, one interview, and seven questionnaires. The analysis was performed using NVivo software. The results showed that self-realisation, the search for autonomy, freedom, and independence are critical factors that affect the decision of people with disabilities to become entrepreneurs. The results also highlight the lack of business culture in Spain, the need for support from family and friends, and the necessity to create a network of contacts for people with disabilities to feel included. Education plays a key role in overcoming the differences with respect to people without disabilities. The findings also suggest that specific legislation or action plans are needed in Spain to promote entrepreneurship among people with disabilities. [Author's abstract]

Early school leaving (ESL) is a serious concern for education authorities in many countries such as Spain. This investigation is aimed at identifying the weak points of educational support policies and making proposals to strengthen them. The article reviews more than 40 documents, including state-level and regional-level laws and regulations about educational support. The analysis of the legal framework was based on three relevant axes for the educational support configuration: support needs attribution, support strategies and agents of support. These three axes shed light on how education policies can prevent education systems from guaranteeing inclusive education. Findings show the need to de-assign the individual attribution of needs that remains directly or indirectly underpinned by Spanish regulations. Regarding support strategies, policies should foster learning acceleration rather than adaptive and low expectation strategies. Finally, more legal guidance is needed to scaffold support agents' real involvement. [Résumé d'auteur]

The challenges of making cross-country comparison of statistics on pupils with special educational needs

Cross-country comparisons in education using statistics have become increasingly common; however, they are not without difficulties. This paper explores comparative data published by the Educational Agency for Special Needs and Inclusive Education (EASIE) focusing on the indicator showing the percentage of pupils with Special Educational Needs (SEN) in mainstream, inclusive education. It questions the extent to which the data presented in this indicator fully reflects the incidence rate of SEN in mainstream education in all countries by examining SEN data publicly available in four European jurisdictions: England, Spain, Scotland and Sweden. It cautions against making direct comparison between SEN data for these countries on the basis of the indicator. It also suggests that such data need to be considered in the context of more qualitative information on individual countries. [Résumé d'auteur]

Higher education institutions in Spain are required, by law, to make anticipatory reasonable adjustments for students with disabilities. This work explores the contributions of 119 faculty members for the inclusion of students with disabilities. Specifically, the aim was to know their beliefs and knowledge about reasonable adjustments, which types of adjustment they carried out, what implications that affect faculty members were associated with making such adjustments, and what support they had to apply them. A progressive data analysis was performed using a system of categories and codes. The results show that the faculty members made different types of reasonable adjustments in the classrooms, and that they had a favourable attitude toward this. However, there was a lack of knowledge about the needs of the students, as well as doubts of the faculty members based on such lack of knowledge. [Résumé d'auteur]

Spanish universities must guarantee optimum accessibility to facilitate the teaching-learning process of students with disabilities. The objective of this study was to investigate how Spanish students with disabilities perceive access to Higher Education and the day-to-day of their academic life. A qualitative design was performed, using sequential discourse analysis adapted to the area of studies with people with disabilities. Two focus groups and sixteen interviews with university students with disabilities were analyzed. The discursive strategies of the students presented an asymmetry between the normative and the factual, although within a framework of inclusion and integration into university life. Six types of barriers were identified: computer, bureaucratic, and architectural -more intense in the traditional universities-, and learning, personal, and social barriers -stronger in online universities. To ensure the inclusion of students with disabilities, there is a need to increase information and training and to establish common procedures across Higher Education institutions.

Through the voice of faculty members, this article analyses the barriers and aids that students with disabilities encounter at university. As part of the study, we conducted interviews with 119 faculty members from 10 Spanish universities. We then analysed the data using an inductive system of categories and codes. The results are presented in relation to two topics: barriers and aids to learning and participation. Some of the barriers identified included physical obstacles, faculty, peers, and a lack of resources and information; and some of the sources of aid and support were disability offices, peers, human and external resources, faculty and the university itself. The study shows how each faculty member's unique experience determines their view regarding potential barriers and aids for university students with disabilities. Indeed, throughout the article, it becomes clear that what are perceived by some as barriers are regarded by others as supports. [Résumé d'auteur]

Despite the great interest in student's attitude towards science (ATS) in the scientific community, little is known in the field of special education. This study uses a pre-post-analysis to examine how methodology influences the attitudes of 16 students with intellectual disabilities in the second cycle of Transition to adulthood. Results show a medium initial level of ATS that significantly improved after the intervention. In-depth interviews added that students' perception of science is something disconnected and unhelpful for their personal and professional future. This finding has important implications for this type of education, such as an urgent need to change school teaching to a style that is not only more active, but rooted in students' daily lives and interests. Steps must be taken to improve their awareness of the real importance that science has in the world and for their lives.. [Résumé d'auteur]

The objective of this study is to analyse different models of educational support that are used in schools with public funding from the perspective of support teachers, counsellors and members of management teams. Participants were 79 professionals from the three areas mentioned above. The methodological approach was a phenomenological qualitative one using focus groups and subsequent qualitative analysis of the data. The systems of categories and subcategories underwent a progressive process of triangulation. The results show that professionals identify support practices that can be divided into two differentiated models: a traditional model linked to a medical perspective of providing personal support to the most vulnerable students and a support model consistent with inclusive education. There are also discrepancies among professionals, especially about the need for support to be provided within the reference classroom. The discussion focuses on identifying essential aspects, to more effectively support students and teachers in an ordinary school context. In addition, professionals question the regulations for their disconnection from the reality they experience in schools. All this requires a rethinking of the functions of support teachers supported by careful initial and ongoing training. [Résumé d'auteur]

The aims of the research presented here are two-fold: to determine the decision-making role that people with learning disabilities award organizations and professionals offering support for independent living; and to assess the extent to which the dominant discourses of people with learning disabilities incorporate individual or social approaches. Ten focus groups were held with self-advocacy groups of people with learning disabilities. The critical discourse analysis approach was used to analyse the transcripts. The analysis shows that the discourse of people with learning disabilities tends to legitimize the role of organizations and professionals as agents in making decisions regarding their own lives. The study highlights the need to make use of these discourses to work together with people with learning disabilities to promote the exercising of their rights in decision-making and taking control of their lives.

This study addresses the associations between students' ability beliefs and attitudes toward inclusion in physical education, as well as the impact of gender and previous contact/participation with children with disability on these variables. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 976 students (491 girls and 485 boys; age 11–16 years), who responded to ability beliefs and attitudes questionnaires. Ability beliefs (entity and incremental) and the 3 sociodemographic variables predicted 20.4% and 9% of the behavioral and cognitive subscales of attitudes, respectively. Students with higher scores for entity beliefs of ability had a less favorable attitude toward inclusion. Girls reported more favorable attitudes toward inclusion than boys. Students who indicated previous participation in physical activities with children with disabilities showed attitudes that were more favorable in both the behavioral and cognitive subscales, while those who reported previous contact had more favorable attitudes in the behavioral subscale and lower entity beliefs. However, the 3 sociodemographic variables had a lower contribution to the explained variance of attitudes.

Voices from Spanish students with disabilities: willpower and effort to survive university

This article analyses the university experiences of 44 students with disabilities. The voices of Spanish students describe the reasons that lead them to choose a given university degree, their transition in the university, the perception they have of themselves as students and how they evaluate their academic results. This study was done with the biographical-narrative methodology using several different data collection techniques, such as narrative interviews, lifelines and photographs. Data analysis was based on an inductive coding system. The results of this study have enabled us to conclude that most of the students chose their degree course because they had a vocation for it, although their disability also influenced their decision. Some students had such a hard time during their first year that they had to change their course of studies. They thought they had to make a stronger effort than the rest of their fellow students, defined themselves as fighters and survivors, and valued this willpower as their main personal asset, above the outcome achieved. Proposals for improving the transition process of young people with intellectual disabilities in Spain: insights from focus groups of professionals, young people and their families

This research aims to present proposals that can improve the transition to adulthood of young people with intellectual disabilities (ID). Four focus groups were set up in three different cities in Spain, each comprising education and social work professionals, people with ID and family members. In total, 32 participants were included in the study. The discussions were recorded, transcribed and analysed using thematic content analysis. Improvements proposed by participants were organised into six themes: coordination between services and professionals; curricular approaches; participation by young people with ID; peer-relationship networks; family and administration. Participants highlighted the need to make the curriculum more flexible and foster curricular experiences related to social and workplace inclusion, as well as establish more continuity in guidance processes throughout the different stages of education and especially at the end of secondary education. Participants also suggested the need for young people with ID to have a more prominent role in their educational process, and strengthening their social networks by promoting their participation in community activities.
