The targets of reaching the benefits expected from inclusive education and making necessary changes and arrangements can only be achieved by clearly determining the current situation regarding inclusive education. This study aimed to examine the competencies of classroom teachers in Turkey regarding inclusive education in the context of their perceptions, knowledge, and attitudes. A total of 128 classroom teachers of third-grade (20) and fourth-grade (108) participated in the study. We employed the 'Classroom Teachers' Awareness of Inclusive Education Scale' as a data collection tool in this study carried out in accordance with the phenomenological method. The data were subjected to descriptive analysis. Apart from the generally positive awareness of classroom teachers towards inclusive education, it appears to be necessary that students' social-emotional skills be supported so that inclusive education can be fully achieved.

This article presents the results of a study that gave a voice to 119 faculty members of 10 Spanish universities, who were recommended by their students with disabilities for carrying out an inclusive pedagogy. Following a qualitative methodology, two interviews were held to analyse different areas of inclusive pedagogy: beliefs, knowledge, designs and actions. The data were analysed through an inductive system of categories and codes. The results show the positive aspects and benefits highlighted by these faculty about their experiences regarding the presence of students with disabilities in their classrooms, as well as the main challenges they encounter when attempting to achieve the social and educational inclusion of these students.

The qualitative literature review includes 34 articles published in English-language, peer-reviewed journals to obtain a Nordic perspective on the status of the research on how the idea of inclusion implemented into practice is reflected in the literature from 2009 through 2019. Qualitative content analysis was conducted. In the analysis, we identified the characteristics of the studies, how inclusion and inclusive education were defined, and which themes concerning the idea of inclusion into practice that emerged from the review. Articles from five Nordic countries were found, Sweden with most of the publications. Almost twice as many of the sampled articles used qualitative methods as quantitative. Inclusion and inclusive education were seldom defined explicit, and the different way of understanding inclusion that emerges was human rights and democratic principles, placement of SEN-students, participation and belongingness, and high-quality learning for all students. Three themes was highlighted in the transformation of the idea into practice: Placement and the organisation of schooling, Teachers' beliefs and attitudes, and Students' and parents' experiences. This literature review shows that few research studies have focused specific on how to transform the idea of inclusion into practice

The goal of inclusive education is to address students' special educational needs so that they are able to fully participate in the education community. The universities have been increasingly attempting to cater for the diversity of students by undertaking innovative projects through the adaptation of new technologies, which is key to their development. However, the evolution of inclusive education is uneven and largely depends on each university, as the resources, methods, and practices vary across institutions. The purpose of this paper is to propose an indicator to evaluate the state of inclusive education at each university. This indicator could ascertain the extent of curriculum adaptation and the degree of accessibility at universities, as well as the resources and projects they are developing to achieve inclusion. It will allow for a ranking of institutions according to the progress made in the field of inclusive education and, more specifically, for the comparison across universities regarding the quality of the specific measures taken to help students with special educational needs. This inclusive education indicator is a dynamic tool that may be updated immediately and provides the university community with the means to guide students with specific needs and their families in pre-university and university stages, among others.

Inclusive education is a contentious concept with opposing opinions on what constitutes inclusion. This paper examines the concept of inclusive education, focusing on the distinction between inclusion and full inclusion, with a view to contributing to the ongoing discussion about the future direction of the Irish educational system. As a result of the 2018 ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD), inclusive education in Ireland is at a pivotal juncture. The paper proposes that key to successful development of inclusive education is a pragmatic understanding of full inclusion, which supports the inclusion of students with their peers in the mainstream classroom setting but, critically, does not limit where specialised interventions and supports can occur in the school setting.[Résumé d'auteurs]

The present study focuses on exploring parents' views of inclusive education for children with special educational needs (SEN) in Russia. First, we bring parents' voices to the forefront, exploring their points of view on inclusive education for their SEN children. Second, we deepen the current understanding of what aspects are important– from aparental perspective– in the provision of education for children with SEN in an inclusive school context. The research was designed as an exploratory study, and data were gathered by means of aqualitative online questionnaire. Using athematic analysis, two main themes were identified: parental views on inclusive education for children with SEN and important factors in the provision of education for children with SEN in an inclusive context. The results show that parents' opinions about inclusive education for their children with SEN reveal obvious tensions. The findings point to teacher proficiency, parental involvement and humanity as being essential to the education of children with SEN, allowing them to evolve and thrive in inclusive school settings. Russia needs to increase its focus on parental involvement in fostering inclusive education and strengthen adequate preparation of teachers to improve the education provided for children with SEN in an inclusive context.[Résumé d'auteurs]

How to become an inclusive teacher? Advice from Spanish educators involved in early childhood, primary, secondary and higher education
Through the voices of 100 Spanish teachers from Early Childhood, Primary, Secondary and Higher Education who carry out inclusive practices, this study explores the recommendations of these professionals for other colleagues to be inclusive. We conducted a qualitative multicase study using semi-structured interviews. The data were analysed through an inductive category and coding system. The findings are presented based on four topics: teacher planning, methodologies, ethical and emotional competences, and training. The results show similarities and differences between the guidelines given at different educational levels. This research provides practical lessons and it highlights that it is possible to be inclusive at any educational stage. [Résumé d'auteurs]

This article presents the research and development that underpins the Curriculum Framework for Children and Young People with Vision Impairment (CFVI): a new unifying framework that outlines the breadth of support that should be received by children and young people with vision impairment (CYPVI) in the United Kingdom (UK). The study used the Delphi method as a systematic process of participatory consultation with key stakeholders. Three rounds of consultation took place with a panel of 48 participants including young people, parents, professionals, and professional training providers. This process resulted in the agreed 11 curriculum areas of the CFVI with high levels of agreement and satisfaction among participants. The development of the CFVI responds to established evidence of the distinctive challenges to learning associated with childhood vision impairment, and the importance of addressing these through targeted intervention approaches. Drawing on a dual model of access ('access to learning' and 'learning to access'), the framework acknowledges that these approaches should promote inclusive education by balancing universal inclusive practice with specialist skills-based interventions. Such an approach captures 'what matters' to the field of vision impairment education – ensuring fair access to a shared curriculum and education system while developing the specialist skills to develop personal agency and increase independence. The article is original in reporting on the development of the first curriculum framework for CYPVI in the UK. The CFVI was launched in March 2022 and provides clarity about what should be taught, when, and by whom. The CFVI promises a transformative contribution to UK policies and practice in ensuring CYPVI and their families will more easily be able to navigate complex education systems and secure equitable access to the services to which they are entitled.

Research on the involvement of autistic children in daily activities in inclusive early childhood education is scarce. In Finland, all children, including autistic children, under the age of seven (before basic education) are entitled to participate in early childhood education and care. Children also attend compulsory, free-of-charge pre-primary education during the year before their basic education begins. Furthermore, attending early childhood education and care is not dependent whether a child requires day care because of their parents' work. Autistic children attend early childhood education in inclusive day care centres. Thus, in this study, we examined the involvement of autistic children by focusing on the objects of their attention during daily activities in inclusive day care centres in Finland. The data were collected between 2017 and 2020, during the research and development project Progressive Feedback, in which children were observed using systematic sampling. The study material consisted of observations of seven autistic children as part of a larger sample of children. The data were analysed using statistical methods. The results indicated that, during their deepest involvement, autistic children expressed positive emotions regarding participation and collaborated with and directed their focus towards other children. Moreover, autistic children demonstrated the most intensive involvement during adult-supported play.

The role of teachers is considered one of the most decisive factors in the success or failure of a child with Special Educational Needs being taught and learning alongside their peers in mainstream settings. The objective of this study is to analyse the perceived efficacy of inclusive practices in achieving quality educational inclusion, and the intensity with which they are implemented in mainstream schooling contexts. The aim is also to study whether there is a positive effect of this perceived efficacy in achieving quality inclusion on pupils with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Similarly, it is analysed whether there is a mediating effect in this relationship of the variable related to the intensity of use (understood as the degree of use that teachers make of inclusive practices). To this end, 454 teachers from the Spanish education system completed an online questionnaire. Use of structural equation modelling reveals that the efficacy teachers perceive of the inclusive practices has positive effects on achieving the inclusion of these pupils. We found a mediating effect of the intensity with which the practices are implemented on this achievement of inclusion. The implications of these results are discussed with a view to introducing improvements in prior teacher-training programmes.

Along with the inclusive reform mainstream schools have become more open to children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Nevertheless, knowledge gaps related to educational research in autism remain. Little is known about the inclusion of children with ASD in mainstream education, especially in regions such as Central and Eastern Europe. The article fills this gap by focusing on an 8-year-old pupil with ASD in mainstream education during typical daily routines and activities. Special attention is devoted to the social position of this pupil in a school community as well as teacher practices in the first grade of a primary school in the Czech Republic. The article is based on ethnographic research, with observation as the main method. The results of the research indicate that pupils with ASD will be socially successful in mainstream Czech schools if we ensure that schools have sufficient and good-quality support. The article seeks to serve as a contribution to the debate on autism-friendly schools as well as on discussions with regard to monitoring the implementation of changes promoted in school systems in relation to inclusive education.

This overview, or review of reviews, synthesises the contributions of influential research on education of autistic pupils to a) characterise this research and b) analyse the potential of this research to further inclusive education. The 80 most-cited reviews in Web of Science targeting research on education of autistic pupils were analysed. From the standpoint of inclusive education, several shortcomings in the research field were identified: First, the reviews very seldom explicitly address inclusion. Second, when they do, inclusion is narrowly understood. Third, only about half of the reviews concerned regular education. Finally, most reviews report positive effects but provide limited knowledge about what methods are most useful for specific sets of pupils and in which situations. The majority explores how to reduce symptoms of autism and how to foster socio-communicative skills. The Inclusive Education Model (IEM) was developed to analyse how different types of research, including research not specifically addressing inclusion, provide different forms of knowledge about how to increase inclusive schooling. The findings are discussed in relation to needs for future research on inclusion and it is argued that the field would benefit from more explicit orientations towards inclusive education. The benefits and shortcomings of IEM are discussed.

How are intense interests used within schools to support inclusion and learning for secondary-aged autistic pupils? A scoping review

Approximately 1.3% (42,555 pupils) of secondary school pupils in England are autistic and there are numerous reports of poor academic and social experiences among this group. The intense interests that form part of an autism diagnosis relate to an increased focus on specific topics or objects and are reported to positively impact learning when effectively embedded into teaching. However, there is very little research into how interests may be used to support learning in secondary schools and little analysis of whether the utilisation of intense interests is conceptualised and implemented as an inclusive practice. This scoping review explored how intense interests are used to support the learning of autistic adolescents and provides a conceptual analysis of the six papers identified, all from the United States. Three applications of intense interests were reported: power cards, lunch clubs and responding to joint attention. A within-child, deficit-focused perspective was consistent throughout all papers, with the aim being to improve the 'appropriate' target behaviour of autistic children. There is limited research overall, and so further research is needed to examine how intense interests can be implemented in practice in more inclusive ways.

There is general support among teachers for inclusion of children with special educational needs, but many lack the confidence and knowledge to support autistic pupils. This can have an adverse effect on their education. Previous studies have explored the attitudes of teachers towards inclusion, but less is known about the experiences of teachers from contrasting school settings regarding autistic pupils. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with twelve teachers from mainstream and special schools. Questions explored the school provision for autistic pupils, including strategies relating to their learning, friendships, bullying and general inclusion. Thematic analysis identified themes describing teachers' challenges supporting autistic children, strategies they adopt to facilitate achievement and the influence of factors such as staff training/expertise, educational ideology, attitudes and the physical environment. Overall, it is argued that, besides the structural differences between mainstream and special schools, there remain a number of additional factors impacting teachers' sense of self-efficacy. These are discussed in relation to recent research perspectives advocating an inclusive educational pedagogy.

Legislation and policy within Croatia, the Republic of North Macedonia and Poland supports the educational inclusion of children with autism; however, such inclusion is nascent in these countries. A survey of experienced teachers working directly with children with autism in both inclusive and special schools was undertaken in winter 2018–19. Five hundred and sixty questionnaires were distributed and 340 returned (61% response); after cleansing, 242 responses were analysed. Over a quarter of respondents had received no instruction regarding autism during initial teacher education; almost half had undertaken no continuing professional development on the topic. Special school teachers reported higher overall confidence, but levels remained low within a number of key domains. Teachers identified a need for appropriate teacher education regarding theory, relevant practical strategies and mentorship/supervision. Implications regarding inclusive practice and teacher education in these countries are identified.

This study investigated the perceived Teacher Self-Efficacy (TSE) of primary school teachers in Ireland who are working in special classes for students with autism. Furthermore, it sought to examine whether these perceptions of TSE were related to special class teaching experience, their engagement in professional development pertaining to autism, and their perceptions of principals' instructional support. An online questionnaire was administered to 139 of these teachers. The findings indicated that participants had a relatively high sense of TSE. Correlation analyses identified statistically significant, positive correlations between the three independent variables and the dependent variable of TSE.
