Research suggests that supportive teacher–student relationships are a prerequisite for student development. Developing such relationships requires teachers to observe, interpret, and reflect on teacher–student interactions and on teachers' relational competence in practice. Although teacher–student relationships are especially challenging with students with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), few studies have examined how these relationships develop. In this qualitative study, teachers from two Swedish elementary schools comprising one intervention (n = 33) and one control group (n = 20) completed pre- and post-tests in which they analysed videos of teacher–student interactions. We explored how the teachers understood relational competence in relation to students with ADHD before and after the video-based intervention, which included a presentation on the concept of relational competence and a model for analysing such competence. Our findings suggest that the intervention promoted teacher development regarding relational competence. Compared with the pre-test period, participants i) used more nuanced relational language, ii) substantiated their claims with concrete cues regarding interpersonal communication, and iii) adopted both teacher and student perspectives regarding the relationship. Finally, new understanding regarding relational competence was combined with knowledge regarding the importance of teacher sensitivity and responsiveness when working with students with ADHD. The preparation for entry into adulthood - supported decision-making in upper secondary school for students with intellectual disability

The upper secondary school for individuals with intellectual disability should prepare for an adult life as an active citizen with great self-determination and participation in democratic decision-making processes. The extent to which and in what way the schools work to prepare the students and develop their skills are likely of great importance for the students' adult life. The purpose of the study was to increase the knowledge of how students with intellectual disability in Sweden are prepared for adulthood, with special focus on self-determination. Case studies on three schools were carried out through observations of decision-making processes and interviews with students and staff. The main findings consist of three different approaches to self-determination for students with intellectual disability: 'Targeted and Conscious', 'Forward with Uncertainty' and 'Braking and Protecting'. Increased knowledge about, and analyses of, the processes that take place when young people with reduced decision-making capacity, due to intellectual disability, make decisions with the support of others are important. Implications underline the need to strengthen the awareness, knowledge and support of school staff when it comes to strengthening students' decision-making capacity. The students with intellectual disability need to be equipped for a society where they as adults will be surrounded by choices and expectations of making decisions.

Teachers' and parents' meaning making of children's learning in transition from preschool to school for children with intellectual disability

This study aimed to explore parents' and teachers' meaning making of children's learning in transitions from preschool to school, for 5-7-year-old children with intellectual disability (ID). Although educational transitions is a growing area of research there is limited research about educational transitions of children with ID. These children often need individual adaptations in pedagogical settings and children with ID are most dependent on supportive persons for learning. In a Swedish context, the transitions from preschool to school of eight children with ID were studied during one year. Forty-seven interviews with parents, preschool- and school teachers were performed on three occasions pre- and post-transition. The interviews were analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. Results showed that the master themes 'Organising for Child Well-being', 'Adapting Strategies for Learning', and 'Processing Time' constituted how parents and teachers perceived and responded to the children's learning. Individualisation of transitions is needed and should be built up by close and tentative adaptations that prevail over transitions. This study shows that for children with ID learning is a social process where close partners are very important for child well-being, and thus learning.

Social media and disability advocacy organizations: caught between hopes and realities

This article examines the role of advocacy organizations and their use of social media within the field of disability in Sweden. How do the organizations negotiate digital media, and what are the (intentional or unintentional) consequences related to the use of social media? With focus on the representatives of advocacy organisations, we study how they reflect and act in order to balance various motives, and what challenges and ambiguities that arise. On one hand, there is a perceived need to be online and communicate with members and the surrounding society. On the other hand, digital communication induces a divide between those who have the ressources to take part in such communication, and those who do not - in terms of digital competences, economy, age, cognitive abilities, technical equipement and digital connection. The heterogeneity of ressources and target groups inevitably challenges bothe the ideals of inclusion and intentions of advocacy organizations. [Author's abstract]

The status of the teaching profession. Interactions between historical and new forms of segmentation
Londres : Routledge
,
2022
174 p.
Focusing on the historical development of the teaching profession, this book explores how the relationship between education and the formation of modern nation states has influenced both the status of the profession as a whole and the differential status accorded to different kinds of teachers within it. Addressing different national and international contexts with seven distinct case studies, the book provides a comparative analysis of the long-term trajectories that illuminate the nature of teaching as a public profession, and demonstrates the variety of forms that labour markets have taken in different contexts.

The challenges of making cross-country comparison of statistics on pupils with special educational needs

Cross-country comparisons in education using statistics have become increasingly common; however, they are not without difficulties. This paper explores comparative data published by the Educational Agency for Special Needs and Inclusive Education (EASIE) focusing on the indicator showing the percentage of pupils with Special Educational Needs (SEN) in mainstream, inclusive education. It questions the extent to which the data presented in this indicator fully reflects the incidence rate of SEN in mainstream education in all countries by examining SEN data publicly available in four European jurisdictions: England, Spain, Scotland and Sweden. It cautions against making direct comparison between SEN data for these countries on the basis of the indicator. It also suggests that such data need to be considered in the context of more qualitative information on individual countries. [Résumé d'auteur]

The aim of this article is, in a chronological perspective, to identify, discuss and problematise concepts for children's 'problems' in compulsory school and the contexts in which they have been categorised and used. To clarify the categorisation in context, the article is based on a previous study on categorisation in Swedish youth education from a historical perspective. School health reports from the 1940s to the 1980s in this document study constituted the empirical data material on which the discussion in this article is based. An ecological model of analysis was used with the main analytical tools: concept use, curricula, documentation routines, experts and educational support measures. The various tools elucidate the context to which the categorisation may be related, and show that social, cultural, medical and psychological influences contributed to what were identified, observed and documented as children's 'problems' at school from the school health services' point of view. On the basis of the empirical study and the components pinpointed by the analytical tool, present-day terminology of children's 'problems' in Swedish schools today is discussed and problematised. Complexities of preparing teachers for inclusive education: case-study of a university in Sweden

Sweden is internationally regarded as an inclusive educational system. This study explores how teacher education programmes in Sweden have been organised as regards inclusive education (IE). Specifically, the study examines how teacher candidates and staff perceive teacher pre-service training for IE in terms of its curriculum and pedagogical practices towards students. The question was explored through a case-study of a large, well-respected university in Sweden, using semi-structured interviews and group-discussions with teacher candidates and staff members, and document analyses. The study revealed that the university makes several purposeful efforts to prepare its teacher candidates to practise IE, e.g. all teacher education programmes have a specific course on inclusion, while this content is also infused into several other courses. Nonetheless, the study also demonstrates that teacher candidates lack a deeper understanding of relationship between special education and inclusion, which can probably be attributed to the wider socio-political context dominated by the special education narrative.

Research about inclusive education in 2020 – How can we improve our theories in order to change practice?

Since the Salamanca Statement was published in 1994 a massive amount of research has addressed the issue of inclusive education. Yet, there is a sense of lack of progress which seems to necessitate a critical look at the field while not neglecting advancements made. Such advancements concern the development of theory, a concept which is given a broad interpretation in the paper. Both theories with limited scope and more encompassing theories have been developed. However, from the point of view of Lewin´s well-known formulation 'there is nothing as practical as a good theory' there seems to be a lack of theories that have empirically been shown to be successful tools in the development of more inclusive school systems, schools and classrooms. The case study seems to be a methodological approach well suited for the development of such theories. Two examples from Sweden, one from the school level and one from the classroom level, are used to illustrate the potential of case-studies to develop theory in this area of research. Today's society promises that people with disabilities can access anything, but in practice there are numerous obstacles, and the ways in which people deal with them can be easily missed or taken for granted by policy makers. This article draws on a project in which researchers 'go along' people with disabilities in Sweden who demonstrate and recount accessibility troubles in urban and digital settings. They display a set of mundane methods for managing inaccessibility: (a) using others, (b) making deals and establishing routines, (c) mimicking or piggybacking conventions, (d) debunking others' accounts and performing local politics. The employment of these shared but tailored methods shows the difficulties to be accepted that people with disabilities still face, as well as the wide-ranging tension that exists between the grand rhetoric of inclusion and modest results. The tension implies that people with disabilities are required to be creative. [Résumé d'auteur]

The aim of this study was to investigate if the type of class setting is related to the utilisation of disability-related services and child welfare services outside school over time among children with mild intellectual disability (ID). A quantitative study with a longitudinal and comparative design was carried out including data from archival records concerning service utilisation among 405 children. Children in special classes were more likely than children integrated into regular classes to utilise disability-related services. Integrated children who changed school setting from regular classes to special classes were more likely to begin to utilise such services and to increase the number of services utilised, compared to children who remained integrated. Professionals in social services and schools may need to improve their collaboration around families of children with mild ID when assessing needs and providing services. Special attention may need to be devoted to children integrated into regular classes. [Résumé d'auteur]

Quality in professional encounters with students who have intellectual disabilities : experiences from special needs upper secondary schools in Sweden

The aim of this article is to analyse how professionals in special needs upper secondary schools in Sweden – assistants, teachers and Special Education Needs Coordinators – understand and define quality in their daily interactions with students who have intellectual disabilities. Our analysis draws on data collected via a digital questionnaire, including both open-ended and standardised (Likert scale) questions. In this study, written excerpts from open-ended questions comprised the primary empirical data used in the analysis. 129 respondents provided a total of 289 statements concerning their views on quality in professional encounters. In order to explore the semantic content of the written excerpts, the empirical data were analysed using thematic content analysis. Our findings show that perceptions of quality can be categorised differentiated into three typological themes or aspects: individual, relational and contextual. Our findings also show that differences in responses – both frequency and content – appear to be associated with the respondents' professional affiliation. Based on these findings, the article suggests the need for an established and shared theoretical basis – in education and practice – of what constitutes quality in professional encounters with students who have intellectual disabilities. This study explored teachers' perception of inclusion of students with special educational needs (SEN) in Swedish regular elementary schools. Semi-structured qualitative interviews with six teachers from different schools were used, and the interviews were analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. Two themes were arrived at: perception of inclusion and imitation of peers. These themes are presented and discussed in relation to implications for research and education. The results revealed barriers hindering children with SEN from learning by imitating. The findings emphasise that how inclusion is discussed in schools merits further attention and that education is inclusive only if it is seen as self-evident that all students should interact. This article examines the experiences of parents of students with disabilities when they shop for schools in Stockholm. It looks at the motivations behind school choice, the kinds and sources of information used and the constraints that parents encounter in the school choice process. The results, based on interviews with parents, demonstrate friendship, special support systems and school flexibility as reasons for opting for a particular school. Parents seek school-based and consumer satisfaction information, through the use of both official and unofficial sources. Parents also describe constraints such as lack of choice, information inadequacy and lack of support. The findings of this study suggest some negative implications on inclusion and equity and consumer empowerment for students with disabilities. [Résumé d'auteur]

The purpose of this study was to examine and compare Norwegian (n = 320) and Swedish (n = 425) special educators' reported practices and beliefs about key aspects of their profession. Data was collected via surveys sent to graduates of special education programmes at four universities who completed their studies between 2001 and 2012. A sociological theory of professions and the dichotomous framework of relational and categorical perspectives was used to analyse survey responses. Despite many similarities, beliefs and reported practices in the two countries differed in a number of ways. Compared to Norway, traditional teaching activities (e.g. individual and small group instruction) appear to comprise a greater portion of special educators' work in Sweden. On the other hand, findings suggest that the relational perspective is more widespread in Sweden and the categorical perspective more dominant in Norway, although there are nuances to this pattern. This study examines the development of the special education market through changes in demand and supply and discusses its implications on the system of education of students in need of special support informed by two theoretical perspectives. The study found out that the number of students and schools in the special education market has increased. The relative size of the special education market on the demand side has remained stable while an increase is observed on the supply side. The results also show that the private sector has grown relatively better than the public sector on both the demand and supply sides. Almost all the market segments have increased on both the demand and supply sides, especially the resource schools in the special education market segment. Based on these results, three implications are observed and discussed, namely a diverse and an extended special education system, increasing segregation within the special education system and a relative stability in the incidence of student exclusion. Special needs educators (SNEs) have important roles in many education systems. However, their roles are often poorly defined, and differ greatly both between and within education systems. Studies show that SNEs have diverse tasks, have problems defining their jurisdiction, and approach special support with different perspectives than other professions. Here, the aim is to explore what Swedish SNEs express regarding their occupational role and jurisdiction, utilising 676 free text responses to an open question in a total population survey. The results illustrate that SNEs often have to take on tasks they do not view as appropriate and that they often experience misunderstanding from head teachers and colleagues about their roles and tasks, and that they risk being replaced by other professions.

While school choice and marketisation have been studied extensively, some areas remain under-researched, for instance, the consequences of choice for the development of inclusive education. The aim of this article is to illustrate the consequences of school choice for inclusive education, as it relates to special education, using Sweden as a case study. The Swedish education system is often raised as inclusive in an international perspective. However, school segregation has been increasing in terms of attainment and pupils´ socio-economic-, and immigration backgrounds, groups that are over-represented among SEN-pupils and under-represented among pupils that exercise school choice. This summary of research indicates that the increased segregation in the education system also regards special education. There is a clustering of SEN-pupils at schools with particular profiles and a lower proportion at other types of schools, resources for special educational support are less accessible at independent schools, and school choice is not as open to SEN-pupils as other pupils. These are disconcerting results for an education system renowned for being inclusive.

This article discusses sexuality and sexual rights of persons with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities. I will address the issue by reflecting on my own previous negligence about the issue, and unpack the ethics of sexuality of persons with profound intellectual disability in the light of ethnographic observation and interview data. I will discuss the significance of cognitive and communicative capacities as regards sexual rights as well as the boundaries of ethically justified facilitation of sex. I will also analyse the definition of sex and its ethical implications. Finally, I will offer some reflections on how we should consider more carefully in research the sexuality of persons with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities in order to enhance in practice their sexual fulfilment.
