Teachers' preparedness to deliver remote adapted physical education from different European perspectives: Updates to the European Standards in Adapted Physical Activity

When schools were closed due to the COVID-19 restrictions, teachers were challenged to engage children with Special Educational Needs (SEN) through remote teaching, particularly in physical education. The European Standards in Adapted Physical Activity (EUSAPA) have been used to define the competencies of adapted physical education (APE) teachers. Through a consensus building exercise, the standards were updated in this paper to include technologically supported pedagogy. Evidence from 125 APE teachers, who completed a technological communication inventory, modified versions of the technology, pedagogy and content knowledge scale (TPACK-21), and self-efficacy on including students with disabilities in physical education scale (SE-PETE-D), were used to inform experts to create technological indicators for the EUSAPA. Teachers used 3 to 4 technologies (email, phone, SMS, Whatsapp) to communicate with students and colleagues, and many reported low levels of technological content knowledge. Experts considered the need to add 13 new functions to the EUSAPA. Most of the functions were considered to be feasible to implement in existing practices and the other requiring extra resources or skills. As further training is planned, consideration of expertise is warranted when mapped against meeting standards. [Résumé d'auteur]

Fostering school connectedness online for students with diverse learning needs: inclusive education in Australia during the COVID-19 pandemic

Over the first few months of 2020, the schooling sector shifted to distance education as governments moved to bring the virus, COVID-19, under control. Education sectors rapidly developed online environments. In this milieu teachers have made swift changes to accommodate their students' diverse range of learning needs. In this article, we draw on a qualitative study in Australia to identify key challenges and approaches for fostering school connectedness when students with special educational needs are suddenly required to be educated at distance. A heuristic to define school connectedness is supported that involves connecting with supportive adults; a sense of belonging; positive peer relationships; engagement with learning, and the experience of a positive online climate. Findings from this case study signal that, despite the efforts of educators, students who have special educational needs can slip between the cracks and are at great risk of losing connection both academically and emotionally. There were challenges with students who did not engage in online learning at all. Although practitioners in the study worked with parents to provide the structures for curricula to be addressed, teachers working at distance could enhance school connectedness through fostering teacher and student, and student and student relationships. No nursery 'til school – the transition to primary school without institutional transition support due to the COVID-19 shutdown in Germany

The early educational support of basic school skills during nursery can have a positive impact on a successful transition into primary school and future school success and achievement – especially for in this context low-performing children. Therefore, most German nurseries developed additional concepts to support the acquisition of basic school skills during the last year of nursery. However, due to the COVID-19 shutdown face-to-face support for pre-schoolers was closed down. This study attempts to examine how basic school skills with respect to language and mathematical skills of pre-schoolers developed during the COVID-19 nursery shutdown. 49 children were evaluated in a single-group pre-post test design using five subtests of the Intelligence and Development Scales 2 (IDS-2) before and after nurseries were shut down. Additionally, qualitative interviews were conducted at t2 to provide further reliable and valuable information that goes beyond structured testing. Research showed significant decreases of language and mathematical skills. These findings support the conclusion that nursery shutdowns may have a negative impact on pre-schoolers' educational skills which help to make transitions easier. Concludingly, the study stresses the particular role of nurseries with regard to early childhood education and childhood development in order to support the transition to school. [Résumé d'auteur]

The impact of COVID-19 on children with additional support needs and disabilities in Scotland

Recently, as a result of international treaties and domestic legislation, children's rights have moved to centre stage. In Scotland, under the terms of the Education (Scotland) Act 2016, those with additional support needs and disabilities (ASND) enjoy enhanced and legally enforceable rights, described by the Scottish Government as the most progressive children's rights regime in Europe. This paper assesses the extent to which children's rights have been prioritised during the COVID-19 crisis. Evidence is drawn from a qualitative study of the experiences of 16 families including a child with ASND during June and July 2020. We conclude that, particularly in the early days of the lockdown, scant regard was paid to the rights of children with ASND as education and care services were suddenly withdrawn. Existing inequalities were exacerbated, such as unequal access to IT, varying levels of support and differences in family resources. Families also reported some positive experiences, such as enjoying more time together and a release from school-generated stress. The paper concludes by arguing that the hiatus in educational provision is likely to have a negative impact on the educational progress and wellbeing of children with ASND, which will take determined efforts to rectify in the future.
