University Faculty Members' and Students' Awareness of the Need for Support for Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder Compared to Those With Physical Disabilities
2020
The Japanese Journal of special education
, Vol.

p. 233-246
Recently, the number of university students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has been increasing. Although university administrators believe that reasonable accommodations should be made for these students, faculty members and other students have complained that these accommodations are unfair to them, making it difficult for accommodations to be introduced. It is not clear how aware other students and faculty members are of the need of students with autism spectrum disorder for such accommodations. The present study investigated students' and faculty members' acceptance of accommodations for students with autism spectrum disorder and the feasibility of such accommodations, compared to accommodations made for students with physical disabilities, such as those with visual impairments or those who are deaf or hard of hearing. In addition, the study investigated differences among the providers of the accommodations, including university administrators, faculty members, and other students. A questionnaire asking about the acceptance and feasibility of accommodations for students with disabilities was completed by 1,149 faculty members and 825 students at a university in Japan. The results indicated that the students were more accepting of accommodations provided for students with disabilities than the faculty members were. In response to questions specifically asking about accommodations for students with autism spectrum disorder, the faculty members reported higher acceptance and feasibility for changing the method of communication in classes, whereas the students reported higher acceptance and feasibility for supports such as preparing the classroom environment and exchanging roles in group work. The discussion deals with the possibility that faculty members and students may play different roles in accommodations for students with autism spectrum disorder.

Developmental Trends in Visual Search Performance on a Cancellation Task With Various Numbers of Targets: Adults With Intellectual Disabilities, Typically Developed Children, and University Students

The Japanese Journal of special education
, Vol.

p. 219-232
The present study examined characteristics of the visual search performance of adults with intellectual disabilities on a cancellation task, and assessed developmental trends by comparing their performance with that of typically developed children and university students. From 55 adults with intellectual disabilities (average age 31.7 years; range 19 to 59 years; 38 men and 17 women), those with Down syndrome were excluded, leaving 26 participants with intellectual disabilities (17 men, 9 women; average IQ, 30.5, range 14 to 52; average MA, 62.8 months, range 32 to 110 months), 20 university students, and 198 typically developed children (101 boys, 97 girls; age range 3 to 12 years). Following instructions, the participants performed 3 types of cancellation tasks with 3 types of targets, and also completed a verbal cognitive test (Picture Vocabulary Test―Revised) and a visuospatial cognitive test (Raven's Colored Progressive Matrices Test). The results for the typically developed children and adults revealed 3 developmental stages: ages 3 to 6, 6 to 10, and 11 to adult. Differences were found between target type 1 and types 2 and 3 at all ages; some differences between target types 2 and 3 were observed in the typically developed individuals over 9 years old. A tendency found in the results from the typically developed children's developmental trends on target types 1 and 2 was also found in the results from the participants with intellectual disabilities. No signifıcant correlations were found between mental age (MA) and any of the target types. However, a correlation was found between the data on cognitive function and the scores on Raven's Colored Progressive Matrices Test in both the typically developed children and the participants with intellectual disabilities. The results suggest that differences may depend on memory load. [Résumé d'auteur]

Understanding of Their Own Character Strengths by Late Adolescents and Adults With Autism Spectrum Disorder
2020
The Japanese Journal of special education
, Vol.
57
, N°
4-5
, du
01/02/2020

p. 207-218
The aim of the present study was to examine characteristics of the understanding of their own character strengths (CS) of late adolescents and adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in comparison to typically developed (TD) people. Questionnaires were completed by 31 people with autism spectrum disorder (23 men, 8 women; ages late teens through 40s, average age 29.8 years) and/or their parents, and 167 typically developed people (104 men, 63 women; average age 22.9 years). It was confirmed that the character strength measurement scale could be applied to people with autism spectrum disorder. According to the relative ranking of 24 character strengths, the respondents with autism spectrum disorder recognized features such as gratitude, humility, and prudence relatively more than the typically developed respondents did. A two-way analysis of variance with disability and mental health as independent variables revealed that for the character strengths characterized by social relationships in which social skills were required, the scores of the respondents with autism spectrum disorder were significantly lower than those of the typically developed respondents. On the other hand, no difference was found between the 2 groups' scores on the character strengths characterized by emotional relationships, such as recognition of support resources. These data enable an identification of strengths of people with autism spectrum disorder, which may contribute to enhanced support for people with autism spectrum disorder.

Inclusive education often refers to a school model wherein students with special needs (SEN) spend most of their school time with students without special needs. According to literature, for the implementation of inclusion, the attitudes towards inclusive education as well as the perception of inclusive teaching practices and resources are important factors. Within this paper, these three aspects are examined from the parents' view. Data from a representative nationwide German survey (JAKO-O) in which 2000 parents participated was investigated. The data was collected using digitally recorded semi-structured telephone interviews. Descriptive results showed that parents' attitudes towards the inclusion of a student with a physical disability or learning disability were rather positive, while the attitudes towards students with behavioural disorders or mental disabilities were rather neutral. According to the teaching practices, parents, whose children attend an inclusive class (with at least one student with SEN in the class) perceive more inclusive practices (e.g. teachers recognise the students' strengths and support them) compared to parents whose children attend a regular class (where not a single student with SEN is included). However, no differences concerning resources are perceived by parents with children attending either inclusive or regular classes. Further, results of regression analysis indicate that the predictors for parents' attitudes towards inclusive education depend on the specific type of disability. [Résumé d'auteur]

The transition from primary to secondary school represents one of the key junctions in the educational career of young people. Research has shown that much of the challenge in this transition stems from changing social structures and encountering different learning environments. However, the transition experiences of students with special educational needs (SEN) have received relatively little attention. Drawing on large-scale longitudinal data from over 7000 young people, we examine the extent to which students with different SEN experience additional transition barriers to their peers. The findings show that young people with SEN are more likely to experience a negative transition to secondary school. Furthermore, the type of need matters and students with general learning disabilities and intellectual disabilities are three times more likely to experience poor transition compared to young people without SEN. Transition experiences also vary by gender and socio-economic status, with girls and lower socio-economic groups more at risk. This paper highlights the importance of supporting students through to their second year in secondary education, promoting positive teacher–student interactions and providing additional supports for those with lower achievement in primary school. For students with disabilities, the research highlights a need for more effective transition supports, particularly during the pre-transition period. [Résumé d'auteur]

A lot of legislative changes have taken place on inclusive education. This had consequences at all educational levels (primary, secondary and higher education (HE)). In the context of these changes, there was a need for more research focused on attitudes towards inclusion and the preparation of pre-service teachers for inclusive education. Recent research explores the process towards inclusion by investigating underlying support factors and barriers. However, this is little researched in HE and there is a lack of research investigating the relation between teachers' attitudes, self-efficacy and behaviour. This study explores this relation, using the theory of planned behaviour. Seventy-five teachers from 19 different institutions of HE participated in this study. The Teacher self-efficacy for Inclusive Practice (TEIP) and Sentiments, Attitudes, Concerns regarding Inclusive Education-Revised (SACIE-R) scales were used in combination with a self-constructed additional questionnaire. Findings show a moderately positive attitude, a moderate level of teaching self-efficacy and show an adequate model fit, however, not all the paths were significant. Our results suggest that policy reforms should focus on more people with disabilities as role models and staff in HE as well as more practical experience for teachers in training with children/students with a disability. Research stresses the importance of teacher sensitivity for the development of special needs students, including students with attachment problems. However, little is known about the antecedents of teacher sensitivity. This study investigated associations between teachers' daily negative emotions and teacher sensitivity towards individual students. Data were collected from 71 teacher-student dyads in special education primary schools and included students with mild to severe attachment problems (6 to 10 years old). Teachers reported their daily negative activating (e.g. anger) and deactivating (e.g. sadness) emotions in relation to individual students during a three-week period. Teacher sensitivity was observed in interaction with the target student in a cognitively challenging and an emotionally challenging task. Teachers' higher but decreasing negative activating emotions were associated with higher levels of observed teacher sensitivity in the cognitively challenging task. In addition, heightened levels of negative deactivating emotions were associated with lower levels of observed teacher sensitivity but only in the emotionally challenging task. [Résumé d'auteur]

This study examines the development of the special education market through changes in demand and supply and discusses its implications on the system of education of students in need of special support informed by two theoretical perspectives. The study found out that the number of students and schools in the special education market has increased. The relative size of the special education market on the demand side has remained stable while an increase is observed on the supply side. The results also show that the private sector has grown relatively better than the public sector on both the demand and supply sides. Almost all the market segments have increased on both the demand and supply sides, especially the resource schools in the special education market segment. Based on these results, three implications are observed and discussed, namely a diverse and an extended special education system, increasing segregation within the special education system and a relative stability in the incidence of student exclusion. Coherence in conditions for learning in special education

This article concerns special education for pupils in forms 1–4, and to what extent pupils, parents and teachers have a coherent understanding of the conditions for learning. To study coherence we focused on three key areas for learning: expectations, relationships and cooperation. The findings reveal a considerable disparity in how the various actors interpret the pupils' situation. Divergent perceptions weaken the preconditions necessary to create a coherent teaching situation, which represent a challenge to the pupils' learning. It seemed that creating coherence at the system level or at the individual level was not valued. The various actors spoke of the same challenges, but only to a small degree were they aware of each other's understanding, expectations and experiences of the same areas. [Résumé d'auteur]

The objective of this study is to analyse different models of educational support that are used in schools with public funding from the perspective of support teachers, counsellors and members of management teams. Participants were 79 professionals from the three areas mentioned above. The methodological approach was a phenomenological qualitative one using focus groups and subsequent qualitative analysis of the data. The systems of categories and subcategories underwent a progressive process of triangulation. The results show that professionals identify support practices that can be divided into two differentiated models: a traditional model linked to a medical perspective of providing personal support to the most vulnerable students and a support model consistent with inclusive education. There are also discrepancies among professionals, especially about the need for support to be provided within the reference classroom. The discussion focuses on identifying essential aspects, to more effectively support students and teachers in an ordinary school context. In addition, professionals question the regulations for their disconnection from the reality they experience in schools. All this requires a rethinking of the functions of support teachers supported by careful initial and ongoing training. [Résumé d'auteur]

Associations of self-perceived competence, well-being and sense of belonging among pre- and in-service teachers encountering children with diverse needs

In this article, we sought to determine the extent to which pre-service and in-service teachers' self-perceived competence is associated with sense of belonging and well-being during special education teacher studies, as well as determine whether there are differences among these factors between pre-service and in-service teachers. These are areas in which there is currently a shortage of research. Our data were collected using a survey with close-ended questions. The respondents consisted of 58 in-service and 29 pre-service teachers, aged 21–56 years. Data were analysed utilising quantitative methods. The findings revealed that the respondents demonstrated generally high levels of engagement and low to moderate levels of burnout. The results further indicated that the respondents reported themselves to be most competent when dealing with children of drug-related family abuse and less competent in working with children with severe disabilities. Although well-being and self-perceived competence were associated, we could not find any association between these factors and the sense of belonging. Given the theoretical and empirical evidence, a deeper understanding of the factors relating to teachers' ability to encounter diverse needs is unquestionably needed. The key findings are discussed in detail, and practical implications for teacher education are given. [Résumé d'auteur]

Effects of special education on academic achievement and task motivation: a propensity-score and fixed-effects approach

As traditional teaching methods may fail to serve children with special needs, special education (SE) services aim to compensate for the shortcomings of conventional schooling. However, despite of numerous studies on the effectiveness of SE services, the influence of potential selection bias remains a real challenge, and only a few studies have applied methodology aiming to surmount these shortcomings. Therefore, by combining two methods (i.e. propensity score and fixed effects regression) to account for potential confounders, we examined the effects of receiving SE services in first and third grades on Norwegian students' academic achievement and task motivation in third and fifth grades (n = 745). Thus, we controlled for a propensity score that was calculated based on observed selection into SE, and combined this with fixed effects regression that has the advantage of ruling out all time-invariant confounders (e.g. genetics). Results revealed that SE in third grade adversely affected math achievements in fifth grade, and SE had no effect on reading and writing achievements or task motivation for reading, writing and math. The efficacy of SE services is called into question, and potential explanations and solutions are explored. [Résumé d'auteur]

Special needs educators (SNEs) have important roles in many education systems. However, their roles are often poorly defined, and differ greatly both between and within education systems. Studies show that SNEs have diverse tasks, have problems defining their jurisdiction, and approach special support with different perspectives than other professions. Here, the aim is to explore what Swedish SNEs express regarding their occupational role and jurisdiction, utilising 676 free text responses to an open question in a total population survey. The results illustrate that SNEs often have to take on tasks they do not view as appropriate and that they often experience misunderstanding from head teachers and colleagues about their roles and tasks, and that they risk being replaced by other professions. For students with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), learning social skills is an intricate but essential task to facilitate social inclusion and participation. Limited research is available on social skills interventions for adolescents with ASD and intellectual disabilities (ID). This article presents a case study that illustrates how the Self-Determined Learning Model of Instruction was used to improve self-chosen social conversation skills in a Norwegian 14-year old student with ASD and mild ID. This case study illustrates that, also for students with ASD and ID, giving them the opportunity to set personally relevant goals may improve their autonomous motivation, thereby increasing the likelihood of goal attainment.
