The school closures during the COVID-19 outbreak triggered ashift towards digital learning. Whilst this is amajor challenge for mainstream education, the implementation of digital learning poses an even bigger challenge for special education teachers, as they are confronted with different learning requirements which might hinder digital learning processes. Previous research identified obstacles to digital learning in mainstream education, but conditions of digital learning in special education remain unclear. This article aims to provide insights on conditions of digital learning in special education at teacher-, school-, and student-levels. We examined whether the intention to use digital learning in special education is predicted by (1) teachers' self-efficacy, attitudes and their perceived usability of digital learning, (2) perceived organisational support and (3) perceived obstacles on student-level. Data of N = 722 special education teachers were collected during the pandemic. Results of mixed models indicate that specific self-efficacy in digital learning and perceived support were the strongest predictors for the intention to use digital learning, while alack of students' self-regulation and parental support represented major obstacles. The results underline the need for specific training in digital learning for special education teachers, and interventions in digital learning for students with special needs. [Résumé d'auteur]

Inclusive behaviour management and the roles of the various stakeholders involved continues to be of concern in education. As paraprofessionals within mainstream classrooms, many teaching assistants (TAs) assist with managing disruptive behaviour. This article explores how TA and teacher teams manage disruptive behaviour situations in 14 inclusive urban schools in Catalonia. Behaviour cases were reported by 17 TAs and 12 teachers through semi-structured interviews. A thematic analysis produced three main categories under which results are organised: roles; coordination; and behaviour management procedures. The experiences reported reflect the importance of having more than one adult in a classroom to manage quality, reciprocity and to avoid excessive responsibility delegation. Limits must be consensual, coherent, contextualised and consistent between all stakeholders involved in education, including the students themselves. Finally, teachers and TAs share proactive strategies for prevention and anticipation, and reactive strategies for de-escalating behaviours. [Résumé d'auteur]

This paper reports a small-scale qualitative research project, carried out in the south of England. Ten children (aged ten-eleven) with a range of SEN, from mainstream primary schools, took part in individual semi-structured interviews about their TA support. Child-friendly interviews utilised toy props and a creative 'Ideal TA' activity to aid communication and engagement. Data were analysed using thematic analysis. Participants' perspectives highlighted the ways in which their TAs had been deployed, which they perceived to enable helpful scaffolding of learning, but also caused a significant degree of separation from teachers. The nurturing characteristics of TAs were appreciated, and the positive impacts of TA support on pupils' social inclusion and emotional well-being were emphasised. [Résumé d'auteur]

p. 187-199
The purpose of the present study was to examine effects of Animation Self-Modeling on the acquisition and generalization of a long behavior chain of a daily living skill for a 15-year-old boy with autism spectrum disorder and intellectual disability whose developmental age (DA) was 5-7. The targeted daily living skill was his sweeping the entrance and veranda at his home by himself. The intervention was conducted in an environment simulating the entrance and veranda at his home. The research design was a multiple baseline design across settings that used in vivo modeling and Animation Self-Modeling as variables. Animation Self-Modeling, which is based on Video Self-Modeling, is characterized by the use of a frame advance and remove background, and the use of words and diagrams for emphasis. The results showed that Animation Self-Modeling was more effective than in vivo modeling, and also that it was effective for producing generalization to his home. Possible reasons for the effectiveness of Animation Self-Modeling in the acquisition and generalization of a behavior chain are discussed. [résumé d'auteur]

Teaching assistants and teachers providing instructional support for pupils with SEN: results from a video study in Swiss classrooms

The reliance on teaching assistants (TAs) for inclusion is discussed in relation to the quality of instructional support. Swiss policy stipulates two distinct models for TAs working in mainstream classes: they can either be employed to work with a particular pupil with special educational needs (SEN) or be employed as a general aide to provide support for the whole class. This article describes a study investigating teachers' and TAs' interactions with pupils during individual seatwork based on observational video data and examining how these reflect the roles foreseen for TAs. The analysis is based on videos of 90 minutes in each of the 31 primary school classes with TA and teacher being present. Results of the video analysis of individual seatwork demonstrate that TAs interact longer with pupils with SEN and pupils with lower attainment levels than teachers do. The analysis of the content of instructional support reveals that TAs often use transmissive approaches, i.e. telling a pupil how to tackle a task or even provide the correct answer, whereas co-constructive support, such as scaffolding, is less prevalent. The findings are discussed regarding their relevance for policy and the development of practice. [Résumé d'auteur]

A significant increase in the paraprofessional workforce has occurred internationally, aimed at facilitating inclusive education. Within Ireland, this is evidenced in the SNA scheme for pupils with significant care needs. This paper focuses on the constructs of SNA support and pupil independence, as based on large-scale research across 20 Irish mainstream primary classes. The study was modelled on Strand 2 Wave 1 of the UK's 'Deployment and Impact of Support Staff' project, involving systematic observations and case studies. Following qualitative and quantitative analysis, findings serve to expand the construct of pupil independence beyond adaptive behaviour to include themes of pupil voice and psychological empowerment. The research also highlights both positive and negative educational practices to support pupil independence including SNA rotation, SNA–pupil proximity and prompting. Results are discussed in light of previous national and international research. Future directions of the SNA scheme are presented, including the potential of scaffolding theory to advance applied practices. Limitations of the research are acknowledged, including implications for research, theory, policy and practice. This research presents as the first Irish study to examine the SNA role using systematic observations, serving to extend existing research on the complex relationship between paraprofessional support and pupil independence. Paraprofessional support in Irish schools: from special needs assistants to inclusion support assistants

Paraprofessional support to enable access to education has developed in differing directions in a range of countries. In Ireland, the role of the special needs assistant has focused on supporting the additional care needs of children with special educational needs to ensure their participation in lessons. The role of the special needs assistant (SNA) was considered crucial as Irish mainstream schools adapted to delivering more inclusive learning environments. Support provision has been recently reconceptualised and within this model special needs assistants are now designated as Inclusion Support Assistants with a very specific care role excluding any teaching activity.
This research draws on data from a longitudinal study of SEN provision with a specific focus on the role of SNAs within Irish schools. Findings indicated that the contribution of special needs assistants was highly valued by education stakeholders. It is suggested that the evolution of the SNA role in Ireland can support schools in adopting a flexible approach to create inclusive learning environments.

For parents of children with cerebral visual impairment, the greatest need during the diagnostic period is to gain knowledge about their child's visual difficulties. Unfortunately, through lack of information, many parents are often left confused and unsure how to help their child. To better understand the impact this lack of information has in relation to empowering parents and helping them to confidently develop into parental advocates, parents of children with cerebral visual impairment were invited to participate in an online survey. Responses were received from nine different countries in North America, UK, Australasia and Europe. Information gathered included: parents' experiences during the diagnostic period, their attainment of knowledge as their child developed and their level of empowerment in relation to the services their child receives. Findings suggest that parents who did receive information at time of diagnosis have more positive relationships with professionals, feel more empowered and are more confident in being parental advocates. Corporeality and critical disability studies: toward an informed epistemology of embodiment

This paper forms an intervention into debates about the corporeality of impairment and 'bodies that matter' in critical disability studies. Toward informing the epistemology of embodiment present in critical disability studies, it proposes new directions for progression within four set parameters. Firstly, insights from disability might be better re-purposed toward understanding the nature of all human embodiment. Secondly, one must sufficiently address, but not necessarily polarise, materiality and abstraction. Thirdly, within its parent academy, the epistemological approach might adhere to critical disability studies' conventions, whilst still avoiding present perils and impasses. Fourthly, it is important not to be so exhaustive and conclusive as to eliminate innovation and creative new trajectories. Overall, the sustaining proposition is, that the productive capacity of disability is immense, toward disrupting and re-configuring ableist understandings of the body in the material world. In Australia, younger people with a disability who require a high level of care have limited accommodation options, insufficient funding and community-based support to assist them to remain living in the community. The research presented in this article is an exploration of the experiences of younger people with a disability living in residential aged care facilities in Australia. This study aimed to gain insight into the psychosocial impact of placement in a residential aged care facility and identify strategies the younger person with a disability utilises to adjust to their living environment. Key findings from this study based in the State of Queensland, Australia, indicate that younger people with a disability living in residential aged care facilities experience significant loss. Loss of relationships with family and friends, loss of independence, and loss of connection with the broader community were common themes identified in this study. Participants countering the losses exercised strategies such as resilience and adopted resilience-enhancing methods. [Résumé d'auteur]
